Bring variety to your freshwater aquarium with live assorted Nerite snails, peaceful algae grazers that feed on algae and biofilm on glass, plants, rocks, and decorations. These packs are a practical choice for aquarists with established community tanks who want interesting snails without a growing freshwater snail population.

Watch them work their way across the glass and hardscape as they graze. Nerites generally leave healthy plants alone and are compatible with most peaceful community fish and shrimp. They cannot reproduce successfully in freshwater, so they won't overpopulate your aquarium.

Choose Your Snail Pack

Select a pack of 5, 10, 15, or 20 snails to suit your aquarium's space and available natural food. Allow at least 2 gallons per snail, and make sure your tank has enough algae and biofilm to support the pack you choose.

A Random Assortment of Nerite Varieties

Your snails are selected from available varieties, which may include:

  • Zebra Nerite
  • Bumble Bee Nerite
  • Olive Nerite
  • Red Spotted Nerite
  • Red Lip Nerite
  • Batik Nerite
  • Horned Nerite
  • Gold Racer Nerite
  • Tiger Nerite
  • Other available Nerite varieties

Varieties cannot be selected. Each order is a random assortment based on availability; specific varieties are not guaranteed.

Nerite Snail Care at a Glance

  • Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C)
  • pH: 6.5–8.0
  • KH: 5–12 dKH
  • Minimum tank space: 2 gallons per snail
  • Adult size: Approximately 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 cm)
  • Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive; suitable for most peaceful community fish and shrimp

Feeding and Tank Readiness

Nerites primarily graze on naturally occurring algae and biofilm. An established aquarium with an ongoing natural food supply is important. Very clean or newly established tanks may not provide enough food. If additional food is needed, offer algae wafers or blanched vegetables such as zucchini, kale, spinach, or cucumber.

Before Adding Your Snails

  • Use a tight-fitting aquarium lid. Nerites can wander above the waterline.
  • Maintain good water quality. Avoid high nitrate levels, as Nerites are sensitive to poor water conditions.
  • Check for copper. Like other invertebrates, Nerites are sensitive to copper in medications and tap water.

Origin: Northeast, East, and South Africa, India, and the Indo-Pacific, depending on variety.

Cold-weather reminder: If temperatures at your destination are below 40°F, include a live-animal heat pack with your order.
