Red Piranha Venus Flytrap
Bring the fascinating world of carnivorous plants to your collection with Dionaea muscipula 'Red Piranha'. This live Venus flytrap offers a close-up look at one of nature's most intriguing feeding mechanisms: traps that close in response to an insect touching their sensitive trigger hairs.
Whether you're starting a carnivorous plant collection or adding a named Venus flytrap cultivar to your growing space, 'Red Piranha' makes an absorbing plant to observe through the seasons. Give it the full sun and seasonal care it needs, and watch its growth change from winter dormancy into spring and summer.
What You'll Receive
- One live 'Red Piranha' Venus flytrap, shipped in a 2.5-inch pot.
- A young plant measuring approximately 2–3 inches across.
- Care instructions to help you get started.
- A plant similar to those pictured, not the exact plant shown. Size and coloration vary, and some plants are greener than others.
How a Venus Flytrap Catches Insects
Nectar attracts insects to the traps. Repeated contact with one trigger hair, or contact with two different hairs within a few seconds, activates the closing mechanism. The trap's edge hairs interlock to help contain the prey, and digestive enzymes gradually break it down. Digestion can take up to ten days, leaving the insect's exoskeleton behind.
Venus Flytrap Care Basics
- Light: Full sun.
- Potting medium: Peat and perlite, or pure peat.
- Watering: Use the tray method; provide less water during winter dormancy.
- Feeding: Bugs or fish food every 3–4 weeks, as directed in the included care instructions.
- Humidity: 50–85%.
- Temperature: 65–80°F in spring and summer; 35–55°F during colder months.
Important Winter Dormancy Note
Venus flytraps enter dormancy during the colder months, typically October through February or March. Plants shipped during this period will be smaller than during active growth. Seasonal dormancy is part of their growth cycle, with renewed growth in spring and summer. Mature size depends on growing conditions and care.
