Bring a fascinating live carnivorous plant into your collection with the ‘Dingley Giant’ Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). Its hinged traps attract insects with nectar, then close when the tiny trigger hairs inside are stimulated. For plant lovers who enjoy watching nature at work, this Venus flytrap offers something far more interesting than ordinary foliage.

Set it in a suitable sunny growing space and watch its traps develop through the growing season. Whether you are adding a named variety to your carnivorous plant collection or choosing an unusual gift for a plant enthusiast, ‘Dingley Giant’ brings a close-up look at one of nature’s remarkable insect-catching plants.

What you’ll receive

  • One young ‘Dingley Giant’ Venus flytrap, approximately 2–3 inches across.
  • A live plant shipped in a 2.5-inch pot.
  • Care instructions included with your plant.

Plant coloration varies naturally, and some plants are greener than others. The plant supplied is young; its mature size depends on growing conditions and care.

Venus flytrap care

  • Light: Full sun.
  • Potting medium: Peat and perlite, or pure peat.
  • Watering: Use the tray method during active growth, with less water during winter dormancy.
  • Feeding: The supplied care guidance recommends bugs or fish food every 3–4 weeks.
  • Humidity: 50–85%.
  • Temperature: 65–80°F in spring and summer; 35–55°F in colder months.

Important winter dormancy information

Venus flytraps go dormant during winter, typically October through February or March. Plants shipped during this period will be smaller than actively growing plants. Seasonal dormancy is part of their growth cycle, with renewed growth in spring and summer. Keep this seasonal change in mind when ordering, especially if you are buying a plant as a gift.

How its insect-catching traps work

An insect must stimulate a trigger hair repeatedly, or touch two different hairs within a few seconds, to activate the trap. The hair-like structures along the edges interlock as it closes. Digestive enzymes then break down the prey, leaving its exoskeleton behind; this process can take up to ten days.
