Bring a fascinating insect-catching plant into your collection with the Fangzahn Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula 'Fangzahn'). This live carnivorous plant offers an up-close look at one of nature's remarkable feeding mechanisms: traps that close when visiting insects trigger the sensitive hairs inside.

Whether you're starting a carnivorous plant collection or adding another named Venus flytrap cultivar, Fangzahn makes an engaging plant to grow and observe through the seasons. Give it the growing conditions outlined below and enjoy watching its development during spring and summer.

What you'll receive

  • One live Dionaea muscipula 'Fangzahn' Venus flytrap.
  • A young plant approximately 1.5–2 inches across, shipped in a 2.5-inch pot.
  • Care instructions included with your plant.
  • A plant similar to those pictured, not the exact photographed specimen. Color and size naturally vary; some plants are greener than others.

How a Venus flytrap catches insects

Nectar attracts insects to the trap. Repeated contact with the sensitive trigger hairs activates its closing mechanism, and the hair-like structures along the edges interlock to help keep prey inside. The plant then digests its catch, a process that can take up to ten days.

Fangzahn Venus flytrap care

  • Light: Full sun.
  • Potting medium: Peat and perlite, or pure peat.
  • Watering: Use the tray method during active growth; provide less water during winter dormancy.
  • Feeding: The supplied care guidance lists bugs or fish food every 3–4 weeks.
  • Humidity: 50–85%.
  • Temperature: 65–80°F during spring and summer; 35–55°F during colder months.
  • Mature size: Varies with care and growing conditions.

Important winter dormancy information

Venus flytraps go dormant during the colder months, approximately October through February or March. Plants shipped during this period will be smaller than during their active growing season. Seasonal dormancy is part of their growth cycle, with renewed growth in spring and summer. Please consider this seasonal change when ordering your live Venus flytrap.
