Trev's Red Dentate Venus Flytrap
Add a fascinating live carnivorous plant to your collection with Dionaea muscipula 'Trev's Red Dentate'. This distinctive Venus flytrap features serrated trap edges and traps that develop red coloration under strong light. If you enjoy unusual plants with something more to offer than ordinary foliage, this cultivar gives you a close-up look at one of nature's remarkable insect-catching mechanisms.
Imagine watching new traps unfurl as your young plant grows through spring and summer. Its color can vary from plant to plant, with some arriving greener than others. Strong light helps bring out the red tones that make Trev's Red Dentate a distinctive addition to a carnivorous plant collection.
What you'll receive
- One young Trev's Red Dentate Venus flytrap, approximately 2–3 inches across.
- A live plant shipped in a 2.5-inch pot.
- Care instructions to help you get started.
- A plant similar to the listing photos, not the exact plant pictured.
How a Venus flytrap catches insects
Nectar inside the traps attracts insects. When an insect repeatedly touches a trigger hair, or touches two different trigger hairs within a few seconds, the trap closes. The interlocking edges help keep prey inside while digestive enzymes break it down. Digestion can take up to ten days, leaving the insect's exoskeleton behind.
Venus flytrap care
- Light: Full sun; strong light encourages red trap coloration.
- Water: Use the tray method with low-mineral water measuring 50 PPM or less.
- Potting medium: Peat and perlite, or pure peat.
- Feeding: Follow the included instructions for feeding bugs or fish food every 3–4 weeks.
- Humidity: Listed growing range of 50–85%.
- Temperature: 65–80°F during spring and summer; 35–55°F during colder months.
- Winter care: Provide less water during dormancy. Mature size depends on growing conditions and care.
Important winter shipping note
Venus flytraps enter winter dormancy, generally October through February or March. Plants shipped during this period will be smaller than actively growing spring or summer plants. This seasonal rest is part of their growth cycle, with renewed growth expected in spring and summer.
Plants are shipped via First Class Mail.
