How a Venus Flytrap Catches Insects

Nectar attracts insects to the inner surfaces of the traps. When an insect touches the trigger hairs repeatedly or touches two hairs within a few seconds, the trap closes. Hair-like structures along the edges interlock to help hold the prey inside. Digestive enzymes then break down the insect, a process that can take up to ten days.

‘Whale’ Venus Flytrap Care

• Light: Full sun.
• Potting medium: Peat and perlite, or pure peat.
• Watering: Use the tray method; provide less water during winter dormancy.
• Feeding: The supplier recommends fish food or bugs every 3–4 weeks.
• Humidity: 50–85%.

Important: Winter Dormancy and Natural Variation

Venus flytraps go dormant during winter, typically October through February or March. Plants shipped during this period will be smaller than during active growth. Growth resumes in spring and summer. Some plants are greener than others, and your plant will be similar to, rather than an exact match for, the listing photos.
